I was a runway model until age 23 when I suddenly became a sickly person who had difficulty getting out of bed. Before finding Sponaugle Wellness Institute, I spent 10 years and 1.3 million dollars at California Wellness Centers and famous Universities only to be misdiagnosed. Dr Sponaugle diagnosed me with severe mold toxicity, Lyme Disease and Bartonella, another tick borne illness. When we returned to our home in Los Angeles, we found a massive Black Mold Infestation in our walls just as Dr Sponaugle suspected. Thank you Dr Sponaugle for giving back my life.

Suzanne Somers: “Breaking Through” – Dr. Rick Sponaugle Sheds Light On Surprising Reason For Addiction (VIDEO)

Suzanne Somers interviews Dr. Rick Sponaugle - "Do you Have an Addictive Brain?"

“Did you know that rates of depression, anxiety, and insomnia have TRIPLED since 1980? What the heck is going on with us in this country? Are we all just addictive personalities, is it a matter of overdiagnosing, or is there something else? Suzanne Somers explored those questions and more on this week’s episode of her CafeMom Studios YouTube show, Suzanne Somers Breaking Through.

Somers sat down with addiction specialist Dr. Rick Sponaugle to talk about why it seems like some people have “addictive brains.” As we all know, being addicted to gambling, drugs, shopping, or even “good” things like working hard can be linked to brain chemistry. But there’s something else going on here that you may not have guessed.

Dr. Sponaugle talks about how we’ve seen a major change in brain chemistry in the last 30 years due to antibiotic use in poultry and cows, as well as city water. Sucking out bacteria sounds like a good thing, but what happens when we ingest so many antibiotics that the good bacteria in our guts is eliminated? Gut toxicity. Which can lead to all of those awful mental health challenges that so many Americans are taking prescription meds for. Craaazy!

This isn’t to belittle real mental illness at all — which Suzanne and Dr. Sponaugle note can certainly be an inherited imbalance — but it does seem important for us as a population to realize that our food and our drugs could be seriously affecting our stomachs and our brains. And a few diet tweaks (eating organic meats, drinking highly filtered water, etc.) might make all the difference.

Mold Toxicity – Advanced Treatment for Mold Toxicity

Mold Toxicity slowly killing Americans

Mold Toxicity Is Slowly Killing Millions of Americans

Dr Sponaugle has HLA-DRBQ genetics and personally suffered severe mold toxicity in 2006. His hospital office had a massive infestation of Black Mold “Stachy Botrus” hidden behind a water damaged wall. Because of his personal experience, Dr Sponaugle has designed an advanced intravenous mold toxicity treatment that more effectively removes mold toxins in just 4 weeks than 6 months of treatment with oral medications like Cholestyramine and Charcoal based herbal toxin removers.

Since 2006, Dr. Sponaugle has successfully treated over 2,000 patients who unknowingly were suffering from Mold Toxicity! Dr Dennis Hooper, the medical director of the Real Time Mold Toxin lab in Dallas, has informed Dr Sponaugle that he is now 30 to 1 the top mold doctor in North America utilizing their mold toxin testing.

Before coming to Florida Detox & Wellness Institute, many of these mold toxic patients had traveled to multiple states and various medical centers in their failed attempt to discover the underlying causation of their severe depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia syndromes. Many developed addiction issues because of their undiagnosed mold toxicity.

What are mold toxins?

Mold toxins are toxic gases produced by indoor molds. Mold Toxicity occurs when patients accumulate excessive levels of mold toxins in their brain and body. Supposedly, only 25 percent, one of four, Americans have inherited HLA DRBQ genetics and therefore, cannot make antibodies to mold toxins. Ironically, 90 percent of Dr Sponaugle’s addicted and wellness patients have HLA-DRBQ genetics. While the highest prevalence of HLA- DRBQ genetics is in fair-skinned people of Northern European descent, Dr Sponaugle has diagnosed the “mold genetics” in patients from Latin America and Asia.

Hidden mold is always present in water damaged buildings. Most patients are unaware, as was Dr Sponaugle, that they are suffering from gases produced by mold infestations hidden behind water damaged walls, shower tile and above wet ceilings. These harmful toxins go unnoticed when mold is hidden because we cannot see or smell them.

The three out of four Americans who naturally produce antibodies to mold toxins can live and work in water damaged buildings without suffering significant demise in their health. However, because patients with HLA DRBQ genetics have no antibodies to deactivate and remove mold toxins, they develop excessive accumulation of these harmful toxins. Mold toxins are lipophilic meaning their molecular structure consists of fatty acid molecules. For this reason, mold toxins migrate to and deposit in the brain – the brain is the “fattiest” organ, consisting 60 percent of fat.

Dr. Sponaugle has performed sophisticated and unprecedented research in mold toxic patients. He has correlated mold toxin levels in his patients to changes in their brain scans and brain chemistry patterns. As well, Dr Sponaugle has correlated mold toxin levels with global suppression of hormonal output. This research has proven that mold toxicity is causative for many psychological and neurological disorders including, but not limited to the following:

Addiction – Anxiety – Bipolar II – Chronic Fatigue – Depression – Fibromyalgia – Insomnia – Multiple Sclerosis – Neuropathy – OCD – Panic Disorder – Paranoia & Schizoid Syndrome!

Mold Toxicity Causing Panic Disorder and Bipolar Symptoms

Mold toxicity SPECT brain scan vs normal

The extra red and white areas seen on the mold toxic brain scan represent severely over active regions that were causing panic disorder and bipolar symptoms in Daniel, a 19 year-old college student who developed mold toxicity within 7 months of living in a moldy dormitory. Daniel tested positive for three different mold toxins, Aflatoxin, Ochratoxin and Trichothecene.

The government set toxic level for Trichothecenes, the family of mold toxins produced by Stachy Botrus known as black mold is 0.2 parts per billion. Notice that Daniel’s Trichothecene level was 3.2 or 16 times the government set toxic threshold. According to Daniel’s parents, he was the happiest 18 year-old in Chicago before he went to college where he developed severe anxiety, insomnia, panic-disorder and ultimately, Bipolar symptoms – for which Daniel was placed on anti-psychotic medications.

Daniel was also abusing Xanax and OxyContin in his attempt to quiet the excessive electrical activity in his brain. Chicago psychiatrists failed to properly diagnose mold toxicity as the underlying causation of Daniel’s panic and Bipolar symptoms. Daniel’s parents and his psychiatrists assumed the “stress of college” was too much for Daniel causing him to have a “nervous breakdown.” Dr Sponaugle has seen hundreds of kids become addicted to OxyContin after moving into a moldy dormitory or their parent’s moldy basement.

Daniel’s parents brought him to Florida Detox & Wellness for his OxyContin and Xanax addiction not realizing they would also discover the true cause of his panic disorder and Bipolar Syndrome. After just two weeks of Dr Sponaugle’s intravenous mold toxicity treatment, Daniel came off his anti-psychotic medications and underwent a successful detox for his Xanax and OxyContin addiction. He no longer craved the Xanax and OxyContin to calm his anxious brain.

Dr Sponaugle has successfully treated hundreds of mold toxic patients who were simply diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder or misdiagnosed with Bipolar Disorder by psychiatrists who remain naïve regarding the effect of mold toxicity on the brain. The majority of these mold toxic patients were abusing opiate pain medications and drugs like Klonopin or Xanax, to calm their anxious brains.

Medical Disorders Caused by Mold Toxicity

Addiction

Mold toxic patients abuse drugs that calm their anxious brain. They often become addicted to opiate pain medications like OxyContin, benzodiazepines like Xanax and Klonopin or become alcoholics. Alcohol activates the brain’s Xanax receptor.  All three classes of drugs “turn down” the excessive electrical voltage in the mold toxic brain, thus making the patient feel more normal.

Most American physicians remain naïve regarding mold toxicity and unknowingly, are the primary cause of addiction in many mold toxic patients – they prescribe benzodiazepines like Xanax and Klonopin to anxious mold toxic patients. These addicting medications treat the symptoms of mold toxicity, however, they fail to address the underlying cause of the mold toxic patient’s anxiety and panic disorders.

Unfortunately, mold toxic patients often find their way to Dr Sponaugle after they have already spent hundreds of thousands of $$$$$ on multiple rehab centers where they were simply diagnosed as a drug addict, treated for Xanax, Klonopin and OxyContin addiction, but, continued to relapse because they needed those drugs to self-medicate what doctors misdiagnosed.

Anxiety – Insomnia – Panic Disorder – Bipolar Disorder – Fibromyalgia

Excito-neurotoxicity is the medical term used to describe an over electrified brain, the phenomenon in which brain neurons are actually electrified on an hourly basis because of the excessive electrical voltage flowing through the brain. Mold toxic brains produce excessive levels of two powerful electrifying brain chemicals, Glutamate and PEA.

It is the increased activation of Glutamate and PEA nerve receptors throughout the body that produces an over electrified nervous system, thus producing symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, panic disorder, bipolar syndrome and fibromyalgia.

Mold toxic patients experience a gradual progression as they slowly accumulate more mold toxins, their symptoms usually begin with insomnia, then as they spend more time in living and working in mold toxic buildings, their symptoms progress from insomnia, to insomnia and day time anxiety. As they accumulate more toxins, their anxiety can progress into full blown panic disorder and ultimately, in the most severe cases of mold toxicity, patients can develop bipolar symptoms of rage and paranoia.

Insomnia

Initially, mold toxic patients may only notice insomnia at night. As they continue to accumulate more mold toxins in their brain, they begin to notice anxiety during the day, in addition to their night time insomnia.

Anxiety & Panic Disorder

With continued exposure to hidden mold at work or home, mold toxic patients accumulate higher levels of mold toxins and eventually progress from a generalized anxiety disorder to a full blown panic disorder.

Bipolar Disorder

Dr Sponaugle has successfully treated over 400 hundred mold toxic patients who were misdiagnosed as having bipolar disorder, when in fact, they were suffering from undiagnosed Mold Toxicity. These patients were previously treated with Anti-Psychotic medications by ill-knowledgeable psychiatrists who had no knowledge regarding the effect of mold toxins on the brain. Every one of these mold toxic patients was successfully taken off their anti-psychotic medications after they underwent Dr Sponaugle’s intravenous treatment protocol for removal of mold toxins.

Many of these misdiagnosed patients eventually found their way to Florida Detox and Dr Sponaugle because they were seeking addiction treatment for OxyContin addiction, Xanax addiction or Alcoholism. They were using drugs to self-medicate their anxious brains. America’s rehab centers are full of mold toxic patients who will continue to relapse until they are properly diagnosed.

Psychiatrists and Rehab Doctors at America’s Addiction Treatment Centers blame drug addiction as the underlying causation of Bipolar Disorder in many patients, when in fact, in many addicted patients, undiagnosed mold toxicity is the cause of their bipolar symptoms and their need to self- medicate with drugs and alcohol.

One of the most severe cases of mold toxicity seen at Sponaugle Wellness Institute is Gary, a 20 year old male, who prior to being properly diagnosed by Dr Sponaugle, had been arrested via “Baker Act” to the University of Miami psychiatric unit six times in a 9 month period for psychotic behavior. He was charged with Road Rage for ramming cars, something he had never done before. He was ultimately prescribed 6 different psychiatric medications by the psychiatric professors.

Prior to age 20, Gary had no psychological issues and according to his parents, he was a very happy and stable young man. At age 20, Gary got married to his high school sweetheart and moved into a mold toxic condo on Miami Beach. His parents and the university psychiatrists had blamed his psychotic behavior on “the stress of getting married.”  After just two weeks of Dr Sponaugle’s intravenous mold toxicity treatment, Gary no longer acted psychotic and his rage issues ameliorated. Within 4 weeks of Dr Sponaugle’s treatment, Gary was weaned off all 6 of his anti-psychotic medications.

Depression and Chronic Fatigue

Nor-epinephrine Deficiency

Dr. Sponaugle’s research has proven that mold toxicity suppresses the production of Nor-epinephrine output from the A 5 Nucleus, the brain factory that produces 90 percent of our nor-epinephrine. This is one of the primary mechanisms by which Mold Toxicity causes severe depression and severe chronic fatigue. Normally, Nor-epinephrine levels as measured on neurotransmitter testing average 40. Many chronic fatigue patients treated at Sponaugle Wellness suffer such severe mold toxicity that their nor-epinephrine levels are suppressed to 10. These patients not only suffer severe chronic fatigue – they feel like they have a 20 pound cement block attached to each leg. Upon asking, they admit they get dizzy when they first stand up.

Mold Toxicity Suppression of Pituitary Hormonal Output

A mold toxic brain, specifically the hypothalamus, is too sick to properly stimulate the brain’s primary hormonal factory, the pituitary gland. Pituitary insufficiency results in global hormonal deficiencies because the pituitary hormones stimulate downstream hormonal factories – the thyroid gland, adrenal glands and the sex organs.

Hormone Deficiencies – Thyroid Hormone – Cortisol – Testosterone

Epinephrine {Adrenaline} Nor-epinephrine {Nor-adrenaline} and Dopamine are in a sense, first cousins – they belong to the adrenaline family called the catecholamines. They cannot activate their respective nerve receptors in the brain or the body without adequate levels of the specific hormones, Cortisol, Thyroid hormone and Testosterone. Mold toxin induced deficiencies of these hormones cause inactivation of the three adrenaline chemicals thus causing symptoms of severe depression, lethargy and chronic fatigue.

Fibromyalgia

Mold toxic patients suffer from “total body pain” because of the excessive production of the electrifying neurotransmitters Glutamate and PEA, the excessive inflammation derived from toxic load and deficiencies of the calming neurotransmitters, Taurine and Serotonin, caused by mold toxin induced destruction of the intestinal lining which leads to poor absorption of the essential amino acids, tryptophan and Taurine.

The resultant up-regulation of electrical voltage in the body’s nervous system can be dramatic and directly correlates with the measured level of mold toxins. Dr. Sponaugle has proven that Mold Toxicity is a primary causation of fibromyalgia in many middle-aged women, women who were previously misdiagnosed at ten or more University Medical Centers. Doctors at these centers typically prescribe addicting pain medication and drugs like Lyrica, these medications simply treat the symptoms of fibromyalgia but fail to address the true cause of fibromyalgia.

Mold Toxicity – Multiple Sclerosis

Mold toxins destroy the myelin sheath on brain neurons causing the classic “white spots” seen in Multiple Sclerosis.

Dr Sponaugle diagnoses over 20 patients a year with Multiple Sclerosis via MRI of the brain. Many of these patients are middle-aged females who initially assume they are coming to Florida Detox for addiction treatment. Had these women sought addiction treatment at other rehab centers, unknowing rehab doctors would have been blamed their brain fog on drug addiction or alcoholism. The true cause of their physical and mental demise, Multiple Sclerosis, would have potentially gone undiagnosed for years.

Dr. Sponaugle uses his Brain Wellness Program combined with his Intravenous Mold Toxin Removal Protocol to reverse damage caused by Multiple Sclerosis. See our Multiple Sclerosis page for more information.

A Response To My Video Blog On The NFL Study – Dr. Daniel Amen

I have received a lot of very thoughtful and interesting responses to the video blog I posted about the recent study on NFL players and dementia. Here is one from Dr. Rick Sponaugle, Medical Director of Florida Detox and Wellness Institute, that I would like to share with you:

“I have utilized Dr. Amen’s brilliant research and SPECT brain imaging in my addiction practice since 2004. Since then, I have treated many NFL and college level football players who developed Oxycontin addiction from their football injuries.

I encourage all of my professional wrestlers and football players to undergo SPECT imaging at the Amen Clinics a month or so after drug detoxification. Every football player and professional wrestler I have treated for opiate addiction, if they played through college level, NFL or WWE, came back from the Amen Clinic with really ugly, traumatic brain scans.

Most of the players suffered severe temporal lobe damage and subsequently exhibited rage issues, often with spontaneous panic attacks, some with depression. Their wives insisted that they suffered more from their husband’s rage issues, while some of the players considered the rage an occupational advantage, eventually they all admitted it got them into trouble. The players also think that it is normal to experience “deja vu” once a week, not once a year. [Read about temporal lobe trauma in Dr. Amen’s Book, Healing Anxiety and Depression.]

With the tremendous advantage I have gained by intense study of Daniel Amen’s research, I have proven that these addicted football players and pro wrestlers, were in fact, using Oxycontin, more for the purpose of quiescing the mini-seizures in their damaged temporal lobes, than for treating their physical knee/back pain.

When treated effectively with high dose pharmaceutical grade GABA or anticonvulsant medication, the players/wrestlers no longer crave or “need” Oxycontin, nor do they abuse alcohol for its GABA A receptor effect.

Alcohol and Oxycontin “like” pain medication, eventually shut down pituitary gland function, creating multiple hormonal deficiencies that are causative for increased pain sensitivity, depression, chronic fatigue and disorders like “Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Hopefully after completing his NFL study, Dr. Amen will commence a study on professional wrestlers and soccer players.”  — Dr. Rick Sponaugle

Hear What Former NFL Players Are Saying About the Amen Clinics

In the wake of the recent NFL-commissioned study on brain injuries and the ensuing media storm, I thought you might be interested to hear what an actual NFL player has to say about our program here at the Amen Clinics. If you have been keeping up with my blog, then you probably know that we are currently conducting one of the largest brain-imaging studies on retired NFL football players.

Using sophisticated imaging techniques our goal is to visualize the brains of NFL players to characterize the damage incurred by playing professional football and to provide treatment strategies to improve the players’ brain function and improve their lives.

One of the retired players we scanned for the study is Harry Carson who played for the New York Giants from 1976-1988. Harry was diagnosed in 1990 with post-concussion syndrome and has been dealing with the effects of brain trauma ever since. He recently wrote a blog encouraging other former players to participate in the study:

“If any of you are wrestling with neurological issues that you are aware of or may have been brought to your attention by a loved one I would strongly encourage you to take advantage of the Amen Clinic’s free offer. If you don’t want to do it for yourself, please consider doing it for your families.”

Dr. Rick Sponaugle
Founder and Medical Director of
Florida Detox® and Wellness Institute

Dr. Rick Sponaugle Florida Detox and Wellness Institute

Dr. Marvin “Rick” Sponaugle is Board Certified in two specialties, Addiction Medicine and Anesthesiology. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. Dr. Sponaugle is also a member of ACAM, the American College for the Advancement of Medicine.

Dr. Sponaugle is often invited to speak at physician meetings and national audiences on “Brain Chemistry and Addiction” and the topic of “The Brain-Body Connection in Wellness.” Dr. Sponaugle was a guest speaker at the White House in 2008 where he met with Rubin Brasalis, Deputy Chief to President Bush. A list of Dr. Sponaugle’s past and upcoming speaking engagements can be located further down this page.

Dr. Sponaugle is the first addictionologist to correlate brain chemistry patterns with variations seen on SPECT Brain scans in addicted patients. He has matched these changes to specific drug craving patterns in his patients. This research has enabled Dr. Sponaugle’s patients to achieve much lower relapse rates because their drug and alcohol craving stops when their brain chemistry imbalance is corrected.

Dr. Sponaugle is also the first addictionologist to prove that imbalance of female hormones has causation in at least 60 percent of the addiction issues seen in middle age women. Dr. Sponaugle lectures on this phenomenon at national meetings and was a speaker on “Menopause Causing Alcoholism and Drug Addiction” at the annual AACC meeting [8,000 attendees] in Nashville, September 2011.

Dr. Sponaugle is the first doctor in America to determine a classic brain chemistry pattern caused by Black Mold Toxicity, the excessive accumulation of the Stachybotrus Trichothecene T2 toxin in the brain. Dr. Sponaugle’s research has clearly proven that changes in brain chemistry derived from hidden mold toxins causes craving for relaxing drugs and subsequently, alcoholism, Xanax addiction and Oxycontin addiction. Americans with HLA DRBQ genetics have difficulty removing these toxins from their brain and body.

Dr. Sponaugle’s clinical research has proven that there are hundreds of biochemical and medical disorders that commonly contribute to the drug and alcohol craving!! Yet, these treatable disorders are rarely diagnosed at America’s drug treatment centers. Since 1998, Dr. Sponaugle has attempted to change the paradigm of addiction treatment to a less judgmental, more scientific model – one that embraces the biochemical basis for addiction.

Dr. Sponaugle’s use of advanced brain science combined with integrative medicine principles for the healing of drug induced brain damage in thousands of patients has taught him how to more successfully treat multiple brain disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Autistic disorders, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Sponaugle is currently proving that these brain disorders can be more effectively treated with integrative medicine protocols than with pharmaceutical medications alone.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: Dr. Sponaugle was born in Franklin, West Virginia. While majoring in chemistry at West Virginia University, Dr. Sponaugle was awarded the Alpha Epsilon Delta National Chemistry Honor Society, the Beta Theta Pi National Merit Scholarship and Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.

After graduating with the honor of PHI BETA KAPPA, Dr. Sponaugle accepted one of four scholarships given by the state of West Virginia to outstanding pre-med students for enrollment at the WVU School of Medicine. After receiving his MD degree at WVU, Dr. Sponaugle attended the University of Florida where he performed specialty training in anesthesiology, cardiac-intensive care medicine and pain management.

In 1985, Dr. Sponaugle began private practice in Tampa Bay. He has served as Chief of Anesthesiology for two Tampa Bay hospitals, Medical Director of three surgical centers and the Medical Director of  the Watermark Pain Treatment Center.

While treating chronic pain patients in the 1990’s, Dr. Sponaugle became aware that patients treated for OxyContin addiction or Methadone addiction at America’s rehab centers suffered painful and dangerous withdrawal symptoms for weeks, further investigation revealed that barbaric detox protocols had not changed for fifty years.

Because of his ICU training, Dr. Sponaugle realized that the Oxycontin detox, Xanax detox and alcohol detox protocols used at America’s addiction treatment centers were dangerous, producing unchecked surges of adrenaline that reduced blood flow to the brain and heart for days/weeks.

In 1998, Dr. Sponaugle began designing safer and less painful alcohol and drug detox protocols using his cardiac anesthesiology skills and a computerized heart monitor known as TEE, trans-esophageal echocardiography. Dr. Sponaugle designed a relatively painless Oxycontin detox that protects blood flow to the heart and the brain. Dr. Sponaugle proved the extraordinary safety of his monitored and accelerated ” detox” protocol in 2007 when he treated a heart transplant patient from Kansas City who was suffering from an Oxycontin addiction of 3,200 milligrams a day.

Dr. Sponaugle has professed since 2000, that brain chemistry is the key to treating addiction. He is changing the paradigm of addiction treatment from a historical foundation of ‘talk therapy’ to a more scientific and fully integrated treatment model – one that treats the brain and the body together balancing brain chemistry through correction of multiple hormonal and nutritional deficiencies that commonly cause drug and alcohol craving.

Dr. Sponaugle’s clinical research has proven that there are a myriad of medical disorders that cause drug craving and addiction. Unfortunately, these medical disorders are misdiagnosed, constantly over looked at traditional addiction treatment centers because they still consider addiction to be a primary disease. How could they possibly know any better if they have failed to look, many fail to measure any laboratory values?

Dr. Sponaugle’s addiction research has proven that common neurotoxins derived from indoor mold in water damaged buildings, petroleum products, paint thinners, nail polish remover change brain chemical patterns causing anxiety and insomnia and hence, subsequent addiction. Matching a brain chemistry pattern that is an indirect biomarker of excessive toxin accumulation in the brain, Dr. Sponaugle has diagnosed brain toxicity as a leading cause of Oxycontin addiction in teenagers and young adults.

Through proper diagnosis and treatment of underlying medical disorders in addicted patients, Dr. Sponaugle has produced an extremely low addiction relapse rate of only nine percent at six months post detox.

Dr. Sponaugle accepts referrals from doctors throughout North America including University Medical Centers and Dr. Phil. He has been featured on numerous national media including the Dr. Phil show, Ricki Lake show, CNN Anderson Cooper, FOX News, ABC News, CBS News and NBC News and PBS.
